Creating Your Perfect Back Yard
By : S. Stadler
When I first moved into my house, I had a problem -- a big backyard, and absolutely no deck, patio, or any other place to entertain guests. One of my first home improvement projects was to turn my back yard into a place where I would be proud to entertain friends and family.
The first thing I did was plan out my patio. My intent was to create an natural environment with the existing plants, while changing as little as possible. I did have to take out a couple of trees and an old fence. However, in the process, I found a nice palm tree that would show beautifully, once the other trees were removed.
Once that was done, I enlisted the help of some of my friends to build the perfect deck. It took us about a week of drilling holes, pouring concrete, and then actually building the deck. But once that was done, I had an awesome deck in a decent setting.
Once my deck was completely built, the next thing I had to do was add all of the furnishings. I found great bargain on a beautiful teak picnic table and four chairs at a yard sale. I spent an afternoon cleaning the set up and putting teak oil on it.
I found six bamboo citronella candles at Home Depot for about $5 each, and they added a nice touch for entertaining at night. We made some planters and added more foliage to the deck and put our barbecue grill out on the deck.
Now that the whole package is complete with all furnishings and decor, I have an absolutely gorgeous back yard and a deck that is ready to entertain our guests at any time. It was a lot of hard work, but the end result was definitely worth it!
