Landscape Ideas - Tips to Help You Make the Best Choices

By : Gregg Hicks

The two most important things to consider as you review and create landscape ideas are: 1) your location and 2) Style and maintenance. Whether it is a small portion of your outside environment or your entire yard where you need landscape ideas, these two things should be carefully considered.

As you walk around your property, identify the area that you want improved most. Landscape ideas are best completed in small intervals and one project at a time. Make certain as you plan your landscape ideas you include your home in the plans. The yard is not alone. The house needs to be the centerpiece of your landscape ideas.

The location of your home as well as the current slope or "lay" of your property plays an important factor in the success of your plans. An extreme example of what I'm saying is, you wouldn't plant a palm tree in Maine. Make sure the plants, and outdoor fixtures, and accessories can accommodate and perform well your geographical location. Also, don't just consider the current season. Evaluate your landscape ideas for spring, summer, winter and fall.

Research the plants you want to plant. As you plan your design, you'll not only want to consider the geographical location but the placement on your property as well. Make sure to place plants that need excessive sunlight in highly lit areas and plants that need shade are in the least lighted areas.

Another consideration that many people overlook is the growth pattern of the plant. It's important to visualize the results of your landscape ideas 2, 3, or even 5 years from now. This can be especially important with items placed close to your home. Your local nursery can give you advice if you're uncertain about your choices.

If you want to place a flower garden in an area that is not level with the rest of your yard, you can. Make it a raised bed. You can put edging around it to take away from the noticeable difference. Edging can be installed with plants or with boarders. Boarder material can be purchased in a wide variety of colors and materials. Choose a material that correlates well with the style of your home.

There are thousands of ornamental items you can place in your landscape to accent your style. Placement of pergola's, arbors and lattice can pull your theme together. Use fountains or sculptures for extra statement. A small pond in a corner of the yard with water plants is another great addition.

Your choices are only limited by your creativity. Just remember to keep in mind your location, your style, and the maintenance required to maintain your selected landscape ideas.
