Success tips in mowing for a more beautiful and healthier lawn
By : Dan Ezell
Mowing too short is the number one cause for damaged and weed infested lawns. Just like with trees, the height of the grass blade relates to the depth of its roots.
Grass' with deep roots have a better chance to survive a drought. It also keeps the soil shady, preventing moisture loss and drying of the sun, which in turn compacts the soil. A taller grass blade also blocks weed seeds from resting in the soil preventing germination.
When you mow, you are preventing the grass from producing seeds. This makes the grass frantically try to reproduce by sprouting shoots or "rhizomes" from its roots. This makes for a thicker lawn.
Keep in mind; the more blade surface the grass has, the more light it absorbs thus making for a good rate of metabolism. Pick a blade of grass and inspect it. As a rule of "green" thumb, cutting more than a third of the blade is too much. And yes, it depends on the type of grass you have as well as the time of year. Mowing too low to reduce the frequency of the job can be very harmful to the grass. It allows weeds to invade the lawn and causes the grass to be stressed making it more susceptible to diseases.
Well, when is a good time to cut? You will know its time when your grass is 1/3 taller than its recommended growth height for the time of season.
Different mowing patterns also makes for a healthier lawn. Each time you mow, you should use a different pattern than the previous. I like to go north and south on one cut. Then east and west on the next. The following cut I'll go northeast to southwest, diagonally. Then northwest to southeast the next cut. Then the following cut from that I'll start the pattern again from north and south. After about a month of cuts you'll have established a beautiful plaid look. This practice strengthens the grass roots by being pulled in different directions, and it also results in less compacting on the soil.
You will have greater success with a lot less time and effort and a more beautiful and healthier lawn when you follow good mowing techniques and recommended mowing heights.
Yes, cutting grass is pretty fundamental, but when you stop and consider the physiology behind the scenes this is the best way one can maintain a healthy, barefoot and badminton lawn. When you use these methods you will see drastic improvements after a period of time. I guarantee it.
